I just wanted to say, you are SO AWESOME for taking the time to research clothes and trends. So many male cartoonists dress their characters (esp female ones) terribly, in things no one's worn for over a decade or things that no one in that situation would actually wear ever, and bristle at the suggestion that clothes actually matter a lot to character design, and that it does make a difference.
